Navigating the Future of Work with Copilot in Teams

With Copilot for Microsoft 365 available now for SMBs to purchase, I wanted to start a new series of blog posts designed to inform you how it can be used within specific M365 apps. 

It’s incredibly important that you and your team understand how it will work within each specific M365 app, as the benefits and use cases are different for each app. Understanding the separate use cases will help you to make it real when you’re discussing it with your current & prospective customers.  

So… In this series of blogs, I’ll be covering Teams, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel – and I’ll be starting today with Teams! 

The birds-eye-view 

Copilot in Teams is all about unlocking productivity and helping you: 

  • Run effective meetings 
  • Get up to speed with meetings you miss or are late too 
  • Organise key discussion points, including who said what and where people agree/disagree 
  • Quickly review your conversations, getting the main points, action items and decisions 
  • And summarising actions from your meetings 

What are the features? 

Copilot in Teams is a productivity beast, helping you across all your meetings and chats. To make it easier to discuss in this blog, I’m going to put everything into three buckets – ‘Catch Up’, ‘Create’, & ‘Ask’ 

We won’t cover absolutely everything, but my aim is for you to have a solid grasp on what the technology can do by the end of this article. 

Catch Up 

If the transcript feature is running in a meeting, and if someone present has a Copilot for M365 licence, Copilot will be working throughout the meeting and taking notes and action points. This means that if you’re late, or are unable to attend, you can easily and quickly catch up on what you missed. 

Maybe there’s a very important leadership meeting taking place whilst you’re in Tenerife with the family? Well, you could dial in whilst you’re sipping daquiris on the beach, or you could instead ask Copilot to ‘Follow’ the meeting for you. Following the meeting ensures that a transcript is taken… and it’s here where the magic happens. 

Never again will you have to ask someone to cover a 60-minute meeting for you to get back a summary from them which makes it seem like a 2-minute meeting. Now, you’ll be able to ask Copilot, in natural language, anything you want about the meeting and get a relevant answer. You can ask for a summary of the important points. You can ask what actions were agreed. You can ask where people agreed/disagreed. You can ask what the follow-up is from the meeting. You can be confident with the summary you get back from the meeting and although you weren’t there (the daquiris were calling…), you almost feel like you were. 

The experience is very similar if you’re brought into a group chat, and you want to catchup on the key points as well – just ask Copilot and get 3 steps ahead.  

Create 

Let’s say you’re in a meeting with your marketing team discussing your upcoming campaigns over the next several months. There are a few ways here where Copilot can jump in and work with you to maximise your time spent.  

Let’s start with getting something off the ground quickly, by asking Copilot for some ideas as you’re all brainstorming. You can bring up Whiteboard halfway through the meeting as well, with Copilot helping to bring what you’ve been talking about into the visual space. And as you’re all talking about a specific campaign, you could ask for Copilot to create a table with pros and cons of the campaign. 

Here, it’s all about helping you and your team stay on task and using the creative elements of Copilot to improve what you were already doing! 

Ask 

This one’s pretty broad, but that’s due to the power of Copilot, particularly in Teams. Many businesses see Teams as the central app that they and their teams use every day – and that’s because it hosts all their chats, all their meetings, and often a lot of their files too.  

If you are wanting to find and use info that’s buried in documents, meetings, chats, notes, presentations… just ask Copilot. 

If you are wanting to get up to speed on conversations or are wanting to punch a meeting summary into Outlook to help you send a summary email… just ask Copilot. 

And if you’re wanting to summarise key discussion points or understand how a meeting went that you couldn’t make… you got it right; just ask Copilot.
